Jean Leray was one of the greatest mathematicians of the 20th century. His creative works and revolutionary ideas have transformed and profoundly influenced several branches of pure and applied mathematics.
Among the specific areas he made fundamental contributions to was the development of :
- fluid dynamics (weak solutions of differential equations, Sobolev classes),
- the Leray-Schauder degree and applications to nonlinear PDE-s,
- algebraic topology (sheafs, spectral sequences, the Cech-Leray cohomology, the fixed point index and the Lefschetz theory),
- Hyperbolic equations and complex analysis (wave propagation, generalized Cauchy's formula),
- Lagrangian analysis.
