We adopt the convention that the first coordinate $i$ increases as one goes downwards, and the second coordinate $j$ increases as one goes from left to right.

[Note that downward and downwards can be used without distinction as adverbs, but the standard form of the adjective is downward (e.g., in a downward direction).]
