Gravitational waves detected for the third time!

On January 4th, 2017, at 10:11:58.6 GMT scientists from the consortium LIGO Scientific Collaboration and Virgo Collaboration observed gravitational wawes for the third time.

It was established, that the observed gravitational waves were created in the final phase of merging of two black holes 31 and 19 mass of the sun, which resulted in forming a single rotating black hole 49 times the mass of the sun. These observations confirm, that the equations of Einstein’s general theory of relativity provide very precise description of gravitational functioning.

POLGRAW team, comprising of 20 scientists from 10 institutions from Poland is a part of the consortium which made the discovery.

The POLGRAW team is led by professor Andrzej Królak from the Institute of Mathematics of the Polish Academy of Sciences.
