Born at Warsaw, 1951.
Mathematics studies at Warsaw University 1969-1974.
Ph.D. in 1977, habilitation in 1983.
The scientific title of professor in 1992.
From 1976 employed at the Institute of Mathematics  of Polish Academy of Sciences (IMPAN).
1998-2002, 2006-2010 deputy director for scientific affairs at IMPAN.
2010-2018(May) director of IMPAN.
Half of position at Warsaw University in 1989-2001.
Long term visits: IMPA (Rio de Janeiro), IHES (Bures-sur-Yvette),
the University of Warwick, SUNY at Stony Brook,
University of Yale,  Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
Invited talk in the Section of Dynamical Systems and ODE's at the ICM2018 in Rio de Janeiro.
Member of Editorial Boards of Fundamenta Mathematica, Studia Mathematica, Projectiones.
1995 elected member of Warsaw Scientific Society. Since 2011 ordinary member.
Since 2013 elected member of Polish Academy of Sciences.
Deputy chairman of the Mathematics Committee of the Polish Acedemy of Sciences 2003-2016.
Chairman of the Polish National Committee for the International Mathematical Union, 2003-2016.

Piotr Mormul, Krzysztof Baranski, Boguslawa Karpinska, Michal Rams, Ludwik Jaksztas.
