We are pleased to announce that Dr. Feliks Rączka is the recipient of this year's International Stefan Banach Prize, awarded annually for a doctoral dissertation in the mathematical sciences by the Polish Mathematical Society. In addition, the jury awarded two distinctions to Dr. Damian Głodkowski and Dr. Maciej Kucharski. 
 
Feliks Rączka's dissertation "D-modules on rigid analytic varieties", written under the joint supervision of Piotr Achinger and Adrian Langer and defended with distinction at IMPAN in October 2024, deals with questions lying at the intersection of algebraic geometry and geometric theory of differential equations. It establishes the finiteness of de Rham cohomology groups of D-modules on non-archimedean manifolds in equal characteristic zero. This is a foundational result in this setting, paving the way e.g. towards index theory on degenerating algebraic varieties. After graduation, Feliks Rączka remained at IMPAN for a temporary postdoctoral position in Piotr Achinger's research group. In September he will begin his postdoctoral position at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton.

Damian Głodkowski's dissertation "Some applications of set theory in Banach spaces and operator algebras", supervised by Piotr Koszmider and defended with distinction at IMPAN in October 2024, deals with questions in functional analysis with a distinctive set-theoretic flavor. Currently Damian Głodkowski works at the University of Warsaw.

Maciej Kucharski’s dissertation entitled “Norm estimates for Riesz transforms” was written under the supervision of Błażej Wróbel (University of Wrocław and IMPAN) and was defended with distinction in September 2024 at the Institute of Mathematics of the University of Wrocław. It deals with norm estimates for Riesz transforms, especially in the context of dimension-free estimates. Riesz transforms are one of the most classical objects of study in harmonic analysis with a broad range of applications, e.g. in partial differential equations. The main result of the thesis is a dimension-free estimate for the so-called maximal Riesz transforms. This is a large improvement over a classical theorem of Elias M. Stein from the 1980s which concerns non-maximal Riesz transforms. Maciej Kucharski is currently an assistant professor at the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science, University of Wrocław.
